Ingredients
- 1 cup active sourdough starter (discard can also work)
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon cocoa powder
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- ½ teaspoon baking soda
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- 1 large egg
- ¾ cup milk
- 3 tablespoons melted butter (or oil)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon white vinegar
- 1–2 teaspoons red food coloring
Optional Toppings
- Cream cheese glaze
- Maple syrup
- Fresh berries
- Powdered sugar
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Preheat the Waffle Maker
Turn on your waffle maker and let it heat while you prepare the batter. Lightly grease it with oil or cooking spray.
2. Mix the Dry Ingredients
In a large bowl, whisk together:
- Flour
- Cocoa powder
- Sugar
- Baking powder
- Baking soda
- Salt
Make sure everything is well combined.
3. Combine the Wet Ingredients
In another bowl, mix:
- Sourdough starter
- Egg
- Milk
- Melted butter
- Vanilla extract
- Vinegar
- Red food coloring
Stir until smooth and evenly red.
4. Make the Batter
Pour the wet ingredients into the bowl with the dry ingredients.
Gently mix until just combined. Do not overmix; a few small lumps are okay.
5. Cook the Waffles
Pour about ½–¾ cup batter (depending on your waffle maker size) onto the hot waffle iron.
Close the lid and cook for 3–5 minutes or until the waffles are crispy and fully cooked.
6. Serve
Carefully remove the waffles and place them on a plate.
Top with cream cheese glaze, maple syrup, berries, or powdered sugar.
✅ Tip: For extra flavor, serve these waffles with a cream cheese glaze (cream cheese + powdered sugar + a little milk + vanilla).
