Fried Fruit Hand Pies

🧾 Ingredients

IngredientAmount
Dried apples or dried peaches8 oz
Water1 cup
Sugar1/3 cup
Butter1 tablespoon
Cinnamon or apple pie spice1 teaspoon
Jumbo refrigerated flaky biscuits1 can
Vegetable oil (for frying)As needed

Optional – Fresh Apple Filling

  • 4 apples, peeled, cored, and diced
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  • (Use sugar and cinnamon from above list)

👩‍🍳 Instructions

1️⃣ Make the Dried Fruit Filling

Place the dried apples or peaches in a saucepan with the water.

Bring the mixture to a boil, then lower the heat, cover, and let it simmer for about 30 minutes, or until the fruit becomes soft and plump.

Remove from heat. Lightly mash the fruit if you prefer a smoother texture. Stir in the sugar and butter while warm. Allow the filling to cool completely before using.

2️⃣ Make the Fresh Apple Filling (Alternative Option)

In a skillet over medium heat, melt the butter.

Add the chopped apples, sugar, cinnamon, and lemon juice. Cook for about 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the apples are tender.

Mash slightly for a thicker consistency, then set aside to cool.

3️⃣ Assemble the Hand Pies

On a lightly floured surface, roll each biscuit into a circle about 5 inches wide.

Spoon approximately 1 tablespoon of fruit filling onto one half of each dough circle.

Lightly dampen the edges with water, fold the dough over to form a half-moon shape, and press the edges together. Seal firmly using a fork.

4️⃣ Fry Until Golden

Pour about ½ inch of vegetable oil into a skillet and heat to 370°F (190°C).

Carefully place a few pies into the hot oil, making sure not to overcrowd the pan. Fry until golden brown on both sides, turning once during cooking.

Remove and place on paper towels to absorb excess oil.

5️⃣ Serve

Allow the pies to cool slightly before serving.

Enjoy them plain, or pair with vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, or a drizzle of caramel sauce for extra indulgence.

💡 Tips & Helpful Notes

  • Switch up the fruit: Cherries, apricots, or mixed berries work beautifully.
  • Make ahead: The filling can be prepared in advance and stored in the refrigerator.
  • Bake instead of fry: For a lighter option, bake at 375°F (190°C) until golden brown.
  • Freezer-friendly: Once cooled, wrap tightly and freeze. Reheat in the oven for best texture.
  • Avoid greasy pies: Keep the oil at the proper temperature and always drain on paper towels.
