Whole Wheat Cinnamon Rolls With Freshly Milled Flour

Ingredients

For Dough:

  • 3 cups freshly milled whole wheat flour
  • 1 cup warm milk
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons yeast
  • 1/4 cup sugar or honey
  • 1/4 cup melted butter or oil
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

For Filling:

  • 1/3 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon cinnamon
  • 2 tablespoons softened butter

For Glaze (optional):

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2–3 tablespoons milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Step-by-Step Recipe

Step 1: Activate Yeast
In a bowl, mix warm milk and yeast. Let it sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.

Step 2: Make Dough
Add sugar (or honey), melted butter, egg, and salt. Gradually mix in whole wheat flour until a soft dough forms.

Step 3: Knead
Knead the dough for about 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.

Step 4: First Rise
Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise for 1–1.5 hours until doubled.

Step 5: Roll Out
Roll the dough into a rectangle on a floured surface.

Step 6: Add Filling
Spread butter, then sprinkle cinnamon and brown sugar evenly.

Step 7: Shape Rolls
Roll tightly into a log and cut into equal pieces.

Step 8: Second Rise
