Sourdough Chocolate Peppermint Cookies

Ingredients

  • ½ cup unsalted butter (softened)
  • ¾ cup sugar
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • ½ cup sourdough starter (discard works well)
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon peppermint extract
  • 1½ cups all-purpose flour
  • ⅓ cup cocoa powder
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ¾ cup chocolate chips
  • ¼ cup crushed peppermint candies or candy canes

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Preheat the Oven

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

2. Cream Butter and Sugars

In a large bowl, beat butter, sugar, and brown sugar together until light and fluffy.

3. Add Wet Ingredients

Mix in:

  • Sourdough starter
  • Egg
  • Vanilla extract
  • Peppermint extract

Beat until the mixture becomes smooth.

4. Mix Dry Ingredients

In another bowl whisk together:

  • Flour
  • Cocoa powder
  • Baking soda
  • Salt

5. Combine the Dough

Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture.
Mix until a soft dough forms.

6. Add Chocolate and Peppermint

Fold in:

  • Chocolate chips
  • Crushed peppermint candies

7. Shape the Cookies

Scoop about 1–2 tablespoons of dough and place them on the baking sheet, leaving space between each cookie.

8. Bake

Bake for 10–12 minutes until the edges are set but the centers remain soft.

9. Cool and Serve

Let the cookies cool for 5 minutes on the baking sheet, then transfer to a wire rack.


Tip: Sprinkle extra crushed peppermint on top right after baking for a bakery-style look.
