Rustic Artisan Sourdough Bagels – Fresh from the Oven Goodness

Ingredients

  • 1 cup active sourdough starter
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 3½ cups bread flour
  • 1½ tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp sugar or honey

For boiling

  • 2 tbsp honey or sugar
  • Water (for boiling)

Optional toppings

  • Sesame seeds
  • Poppy seeds
  • Everything bagel seasoning
  • Cheese

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Prepare the Dough

In a large bowl, mix sourdough starter, warm water, and sugar/honey.
Add bread flour and salt, then mix until a rough dough forms.


2. Knead the Dough

Knead the dough for 8–10 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.


3. First Rise

Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl.
Cover and let it rest for 6–8 hours (or overnight) until slightly puffy.


4. Divide the Dough

Transfer the dough to a floured surface.
Divide it into 8 equal pieces.


5. Shape the Bagels

Roll each piece into a ball.
Use your finger to poke a hole in the center and gently stretch to form a bagel shape.


6. Second Rest

Place the shaped bagels on a lined tray.
Cover and let them rest for 30–60 minutes.


7. Boil the Bagels

Bring a large pot of water to a boil and add honey or sugar.
Boil each bagel for 30–40 seconds per side.


8. Add Toppings

Place boiled bagels on a baking tray.
Sprinkle with sesame seeds, poppy seeds, or seasoning.


9. Bake

Bake in a preheated oven at 220°C (425°F) for 20–25 minutes until golden brown.


10. Cool & Serve

Let them cool for 10–15 minutes, then enjoy with cream cheese, butter, or avocado 🥯💛
